Injectables Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable treatment for various cosmetic and medical concerns ranging from fine lines to migraine headaches. This treatment uses a highly purified version of the botulinum toxin protein to temporarily relax muscles in your face that cause wrinkles.

Though some wrinkles are caused by factors such as sun damage and gravity, others are caused by repetitive muscle contractions. Botox relaxes the muscles that cause horizontal forehead furrows, crow’s feet around your eyes, and frown lines between your brows.

Dr. Tamburrino may also recommend Botox to relax a muscle that causes facial asymmetry or to smooth the appearance of tight neck bands. Medically, Botox reduces excessive perspiration and treats migraines and muscle spasms.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers smooth and tighten your skin by restoring lost tissue volume beneath the skin’s surface. The fat tissue that provides your face with a youthful contour naturally breaks down over time. This may lead to sagging skin, sunken cheeks, or deep facial wrinkles.

Dr. Tamburrino may recommend dermal fillers to treat these signs of aging or to add volume to thin lips. However, nonsurgical treatments such as dermal fillers don’t achieve the same effect as surgery.

In some cases, Dr. Tamburrino may recommend surgical procedures such as a facelift, brow lift, or eyelid surgery. You may also choose to get dermal fillers in addition to your facial rejuvenation surgery.

What should I expect from an injectable treatment?

The process begins with a consultation, during which Dr. Tamburrino listens attentively to your cosmetic concerns and desired outcome. He uses your preferences and his expertise to develop a customized injectable treatment plan that best addresses your needs.

Dr. Tamburrino performs cosmetic injections in the office at Prestige Institute for Plastic Surgery. The amount of time it takes depends on the type and number of injections you receive. Botox is a quick, 10-minute procedure, while dermal fillers may take longer.

If you’re concerned about pain during lip injections, Dr. Tamburrino offers nerve blocks to minimize discomfort.
