Coolsculpting Q & A

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a noninvasive treatment to reduce unwanted body fat that resists diet and exercise. This procedure uses cryolipolysis (fat-freezing), to target and destroy fat cells.

Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting reduces body fat without incisions, anesthesia, or any downtime for recovery. Although individual results may vary, CoolSculpting has been shown to reduce about 20-25% of fat cells in the treatment area.

How does CoolSculpting work?

When you lose weight with diet and exercise, your fat cells shrink but never entirely disappear. This may lead to fat deposits that don’t go away no matter how hard you work in the gym.

Using controlled cooling technology, CoolSculpting destroys fat cells by freezing them. Over time, your body naturally flushes out the damaged fat cells along with other cellular debris. Once these fat cells are gone, they never come back.

Who is a good candidate for CoolSculpting?

You may be a good candidate for CoolSculpting if you struggle to lose fat bulges in common problem areas. CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared to reduce fat in the following areas:

  • Submental area (under the chin)
  • Abdomen and love handles
  • Thighs and buttocks
  • Back and upper arms

However, CoolSculpting is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for weight loss. You should be at or near your ideal body weight before considering CoolSculpting.

What should I expect from a CoolSculpting procedure?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Tamburrino discusses your individual concerns and aesthetic goals. Using this information, he creates a customized body-contouring plan to achieve your ideal physique.

If you’re not a good candidate for CoolSculpting, Dr. Tamburrino may recommend another treatment, such as liposuction or Smartlipo.

The length of your CoolSculpting session depends on the areas being treated. Dr. Tamburrino may be able to treat multiple areas in the same appointment. Typical CoolSculpting treatments last 35-60 minutes.

CoolSculpting isn’t painful, but you may feel a deep cooling sensation. Many people relax, read, or even take a nap during treatment.

Afterward, you may experience some redness or swelling in the treatment area. This usually goes away within a few days or weeks.

Although some patients notice results after only one treatment, you may need multiple sessions to achieve the results you desire. CoolSculpting results appear gradually over the course of several weeks as your body removes the frozen fat cells.
